European Commission, Directorate General for Research and Innovation, FP7-SCIENCE-IN-SOCIETY 2011-1, STAGES, Structural Transformation to Achieve Gender Equality in Science (SiS.2011.2.1.1.-1)
Project co-funded by the General Inspectorate for relations with the European Union of the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (IGRUE).
UAIC Research Group on Gender Equality in Science is a multidisciplinary research team set up within the frame of the STAGES project in order to conduct scientific studies and evaluations on Gender Equal Opportunities in Romanian educational and research institutions, particularly at the UAIC (see the main objectives, research group members, research and publications).
Since 2013, "Gender Equality in Science" is a theme for PhD studies at the UAIC. Prof. dr. Doina Balahur, scientific coordinator for PhD in Sociology, announced the topics and the bibliography for 2014 candidates competition. As for 2013, the research will be carried out in cooperation with the FP7 European project STAGES at the UAIC. (more info here).
According to the Grant Agreement (GA) of the STAGES project, the UAIC-STAGES team had to prepare 12 deliverables during the 4 years period of the project's implementation (1 January 2012-31 December 2015). While the Working Package 4 coordinated by the UAIC team had, among the other WPs, the highest number of actions performed within the process of implementation of the Action Plan (that is more than 90 actions), at the same time the team also reported the highest number of deliverables, each one describing the content of several activities, so that almost 30 actions have been finally taken into account. Consequently, a total of more than 1,000 pages containing the comprehensive evaluation of the activities performed at the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi (Romania) have been written by the UAIC-STAGES team and sent to the European Commission – DG Research and Innovation, to be uploaded in the database of the European projects portal and registered as our contributions for the FP7 STAGES project.
The 12th deliverable on the activities carried out at the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University has been prepared by the UAIC-STAGES team and submitted to the European Commission – DG Research and Innovation on 30 October2015. This last report presents several actions undertaken in the 4th year of the project, namely, Documents and materials on the 4th thematic workshop of the UAIC Network of Women in Academia and Research (Action 4.4.3), Info-day. Early career researchers day (Action 4.3.3), Work-life balance measures (Action 4.2.2), and Proceedings of the Second International Conference "Women and Scientific Research: outcomes and future challenges" (Action 4.8.3). The deliverable contains analyses on these actions and illustrative documents and presentations that sum up 129 pages.
The final research report on the "Climate and organizational values evaluation survey" is the content of the 11th deliverable prepared by the UAIC- STAGES team and submitted to the EC – DG Research and Innovation. From our research findings resulted important changes of the perception on gender equality in science. The data analysis made evidence of the formative effects of the practical actions carried out by the UAIC-STAGES project on the capacity of the participating actors –female and male academics and research staff - to understand, evaluate, take position and activate on gender equality issues. These formative effects are visible not only in the understanding of the issues of gender equality in science but also in the capacity to identify the discrimination in different situations and circumstances that prior to participation at the activities of the project had no relevance and connotation for the issue of gender equality in science. The relevance of the results is better understood if we compare them with the ones got from the first evaluation carried out in 2012. In the first evaluation we observed that according to the analysis of the data collected the phenomenon of "gender blindness" dominated the opinions of both senior and young academic and research staff from the UAIC. After more than three years and half of intensive activities that have promoted a participatory and cooperation strategy integrating practically the whole university, the analysis of the data collected made evidence that we may talk on real changes in opinions that are important indices and indicators for changes in mentalities and attitudes. These changes in perceptions and opinions do not also simply mean a "raising awareness" phenomenon but a true reconstruction of understanding about the issue of equality vs inequality in science.
The 10th deliverable prepared and sent at the European Commission - DG Research and Innovation by the UAIC-STAGES team reported on the action concerning the production of a series of Documentary films on the life and career of outstanding women scientists in Europe. The three films produced on the period 2013-2015 under the title UAIC Profiles of Women in Science had as main objective to making known the scientific achievements of women researchers and professors from the UAIC by presenting their professional profiles and highlighting their most relevant results in science as well as their contribution, as role models for young researchers, at the promotion of gender equality in science at our university. The protagonists of these promotional films have been Prof. Dr. Liliana Mitoseriu (Faculty of Physics), Prof. Dr. Elena Bâcu and Prof. Dr. Alexandra-Raluca Iordan (Faculty of Chemistry), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luminița Bejenaru, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zenovia Olteanu and Prof. Dr. Maria-Magdalena Zamfirache (Faculty of Biology), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Iuliana Breabăn (Faculty of Geography-Geology), Prof. Dr. Violeta Fotea (Faculty of Mathematics), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lenuța Alboaie and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Corina Forăscu (Faculty of Computer Sciences), Prof. Dr. Rodica Dimitriu (Faculty of Letters), Prof. Dr. Adriana Prodan (Faculty of Economics and Business Administration) and Lecturer Dr. Snejana Sulima (Faculty of Law). The report concluded that by the public presentation of these films within the annual events "Women Researchers Day - Celebration of the UAIC Women in Science", which had more than 500 participants, as well as by their wide dissemination through the website of the UAIC-STAGES project and through mass-media and social media, the action contributed at the increasing public notority of women researchers and therefore received high appreciation of the academic community members from inside and outside the UAIC. It is noteworthy, in this respect, that the 3 films, having together 85 minutes, registred so far a total of more than 1500 views on YouTube.
On the 30 of October 2014 the team of the UAIC-STAGES project has sent at the European Commission (DG Research and Innovation) the 9th Deliverable on the activities carried out within the project, which describes, in more than 30 pages, three of the actions conceived, planned and implemented this year. Among them, a large part of the D. 4.9 presented the thematic, objectives and agenda of the annual workshop of the UAIC Network of Women in Academia and Research, where the communication strategies for increasing the women scientists' visibility inside and outside University have been approached. The "Early Career Researchers Day", an action aiming at supporting motivation and commitment for a career in science and research and which has been organized this year twice times, has also been described. Finally, the D.4.9 made an analysis of the work-life balance measures and strategies taken at the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University to provide a friendly environment for academic staff, young researchers and students who are having families and children as well as other care obligations.(Action 4.2.2)
